The lawsuit claims that the documentary violates the copyright of the book and has sought more than $1 million in damages. According to the lawsuit, the copyright actually belongs to the Foundation for Inner Peace, Inc., and the Church asserts that the copyright was invalid from its inception.

In September 1991, FIP sought to register the copyright with “Jesus” as the author, but they learned that they cannot grant copyright to a non-physical author. As a result, FIP decided to give permission to Marianne Williamson on September 10, 1991. She released the film the next year.
